Design notes
The images and documentation supplied to me for this story were given a treatment and then were isolated from their backgrounds. I then developed a visual language or style guide for the whole story which featured red dot stickers (like those seen on sold artworks at galleries), bits of paper with torn edges, worn paper textures, found objects (stickers, envelopes), snippets from official documents, isolated handwriting and faded printed photographs. We wanted to create an aesthetic that felt like we were on a personal investigation with the reporter as they pieced together small leads and redacted documents one piece at a time.

Design notes
All of the collage images created for this article are a remix of widely available historical public domain images. This was an artistic decision to evoke a particular time in history and required a lot of textures, re-colouring and composing to create new scenes with familiar iconography (see Lewis Carroll’s Alice).
